The Las Vegas real estate industry has grown into the digital age and there are several real estate scams popping up as a result. We’ll walk you through identifying home rental scams so that you don’t end up losing your money trying to find a place to live.
There have been cases of people losing thousands of dollars while trying to rent. More often than not, there are red flags to look out for during your initial search; It’s vitally important to always do your research when seeking a new home to rent. Let’s go over some of the red flags you should watch out for when trying to rent.
Identifying Home Rental Scams: The Lease Price is Too Good to be True
The old saying “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is” holds up well in this scenario. If you find a rental property in Las Vegas with monthly rent significantly lower than other listings in the area, you’ll want to do a bit more digging to make sure the listing is legitimate.
Make sure to follow up with the Las Vegas real estate agent or property owner who created the rental listing. Do your due diligence and ask questions about the property, lease agreement, and rental history.
The Owner Does not Want to Meet in Person
Another way of identifying home rental scams in Las Vegas occurs when the owner does not want to meet in person. Any good lessor is going to meet the potential renter to talk about the property and potential lease agreement before asking for a down payment. Even if you’re moving from out of state, you’ll want to make sure you meet with the property owner or manager before trying to rent. Scammers love to distance themselves from the listing.
Lack of a Screening Process
Any normal landlord would want to know the type of person they are letting into their home. Usually, they conduct a background and credit score check on any potential renters. They might even reach out to previous landlords to get a bit more information on the applicant. If they don’t perform any sort of screening on their applicants, it’s possible they’re not legitimate.
The Owner Does Not Want You to View the Property
It’s standard for anyone to view a housing listing in person before deciding if they want to rent or not. Sometimes the scammers download images from somewhere else and post them on various real estate listing websites. If you’re unable to view the listing in person, it may be a scam, and you should move on immediately.
Real estate and rental scams happen all the time. That’s why we at LasVegasRealEstate.com advise people to take their time to learn more about the listing first. Come talk to us if you are looking for a home to rent and we’ll find you legitimate and well priced rental properties to view!
